  • THESIS PROCESS AND REQUIREMENTS

The Master's Thesis process is a two-semester process, requiring a semester of pre-thesis coursework involving research and writing, followed by a semester of thesis writing, editing and defense. Students planning to pursue a Master's thesis should review the relevant Graduate Catalog portions for their specific academic program. Students should also consult their academic program requirements and guidelines for specific minimum grades in pre-thesis coursework as well as GPA and GRE score requirements that must be met prior to registration for thesis coursework.

Student and thesis advisor should also review the Graduate School Thesis Manual to ensure all thesis registration procedures are followed and proper formatting is utilized. Students who complete a Master’s thesis must submit one electronic copy of the final version of the approved thesis to the Graduate School. After completion of thesis writing, students must defend their thesis in a public forum. Thesis committee composition is at the discretion of the thesis chair's department, with a minimum of two faculty on the committee (including the thesis committee chair). The thesis defense should be planned well in advance of the due date for final grades by instructors, so that ample time is available for revision.
